Reading is one of the important skills that should be learned by the students in Senior High School, because most of the English activity in their learning process is reading. Based on the observation, students still find the difficulties in understanding the text. Students feel that the way their teacher teaches them is not interesting. It makes the students feel bored and do not have any motivation to learn about reading.
There are two objectives in this research. The first is to know whether the use of TELLS strategy can improve the learning motivation of the narrative text reading skill of the eleventh graders of MAN Kota Magelang in the school year 2018/2019 or not. Secondly, it is to know how great is the improvement of the students' narrative text reading skill who are taught by using TELLS strategy.
The researcher conducted a Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was divided into three phases, they are Pre Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The researcher took XI IPS 1 students of MAN Kota Magelang in the school year 2018/2019 as the subject of this research. The technique that was used by the writer to collect the data were test and non-test techniques. The data were analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques
There was a good improvement from the students after the researcher taught them by using TELLS Strategy. They are curious and active in the learning process of the narrative text reading skill because they want to improve their reading skill. The result of the test showed that their score were improved. In the Pre Cycle their average score is 69.77, and in Cycle I their average score is 73.51. It means that they are any improvement of their score that is 3.74 point. The average score in Cycle II is 81.08 and it means they are any improvement from Cycle I to Cycle II that is 7.57 point. The total improvement from Pre Cycle into Cycle II is 11.31 point.
